Commend us to the New York World for the most hoary-headed liar in the country. It stated tha President Cleverand is opposed to the election of the Democratic ticket in New York, and the Jb'tar responds and xays that it is authorized to say that the President favors the . elec tion of the entire ticket. . , - . y - . The figure , of the Confederate steamship Star of the West has just been raisel at Green wood, Miss. It is of solid iron and weighs about 300 pounds. The Star of the West was sunk in February, 1863, in the Talla hatchie River, three miles below Greenwood, where some parts of Her may still be seen. The figure head is remarkably well preserved. It was purchased from the finder by Dr. J. P. Henry, who will present it to the Confederate Monumental As- 8ociation of Richmond, Va. ' - - The decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the Anarchist eases is a righteous one. It could not have been otherwise: as we have all along asserted. The last hope of the condemned men has been shattered and on Friday next they will suffer the extreme penalty of the laws which they have out raged. This means death to Anar chism in this country. They will never hold up their heads here again. The cry of the order is "the people" and "for the people1 and yet it is at the hands of the people they will suffer. There is no room in this "land of the free and home of the brave'1 for such despicable theories as they promulgate. There are are no crowned heads here no scions of royalty, no czar and no sultan ith an immense standing army to maintain "the divine right of kings." The people are their own 'kings; they make their own laws and they execute them, impar tially, without fear or favor. Every man here has the right to act and to vote and to think and to speak as may to him seem best; only, he must keep within the purlieus of the law. There is liberty here, but no license. Murder is punished with death and incitement to murder is under the penalty also. A crime against the State is a crime against the people, for the people are the State. OUR WASHINGTON LETTEK. Sp. Coit. Daily Review. Washington, D. C, Nov. 1, '87. Much disappointment was felt by the crowd that gathered at the Su preme Court Room yesterday morn ing, at the failure of the Court to announce its decision in the Anarch ist case. When they found that the docket was being proceeded with, a grand rush was made for the doors, arid with so much noise that the offi cers had to interfere. As usual in such cases reasons were readily as signed for the unexpected delay; the unprofessional multitude generally agreeing that it was due to a divis ion of sentiment among the Justices and was construed us favorable to the condemned men. .The fact is, I guess, that it was only because the Chief Justice, who always formulates the decision of the Cours upon motions, had not had time to write it out. The deeision is confidently looked for to-inorrow, and the weight of nniriion nmoiiir the profession seems to be that, Unless the Governor of Illinois intervenes, there will be seven scoundrels less in that State a few weeks hence than there are now. A young colored woman who was charged with stealing a quantity of clothing, &;., from her employer in this city, was arrested in Baltimore yesterday and brought back here. When arrested the girl had on an extra-sized bustle which the officers proceeded to investigate. They found in it two embroidered skirts and other articles of underwear, which she said she had picked up in her employer's house, and packed in her bustles to increase its size and make it fashionable. She will have a chance to repeat the explanation to the police judge to-morrow morn ing. Eugene Ashton, the elocutionist, whose sudden death in Philadelphia was investigated by the coroner this morning, was well known here, and was quite a figure in society last Winter. Opinion Is divided as to whether the prussic acid which caused his death was taken with suicidal intent or was the mistake of the druggist. The President gave, audience to the English Peace Delegation to day and there was some speech-making, with an appropriate response from the President. Wherever the Pjo fessor has appeared with his show he has met a popular demand which has been appreciated by the people. In speaking of the entertainment the Hazelton (Pa.) Xctvs says: Prof. Lowanda's Gift Show at tracted a very large audience last night, standing room being scarcely obtainable. The performance con sisted of feats of magic, ventrilo quism and specialties, and was first class throughout. Some beautiful and costly presents were given away. " Opera House. The Jessica Thomas Company re peated the plays of "The Daughter of the Regiment," ami "The Loan of a Lover" to rather a small audience. The company maintained their well earned reputations as artists of gen. uine merit, and they were repeated ly applauded by their delighted lis teners. To-night they will appear in the farce entitled, "A Red Hot Time,"" which is a companion piece to the "Bunch of Keys," and other roaring farces of that ilk, in which the full power of the comedians will be tested. The troupe deserves a most liberal patronage ami we hope that they may be greeted to-night by a crowded house. Comic Opera. The MacCollin Opera Company, consisting of 35 persons, will appear- at the Opera House here next Mon day and Tuesday nights. They have played quite a successful engage" ment in Charleston this week, where they received much praise from the press. We have conversed with several who have heard them and all are unanimous in according to the company unstinted p raise. They will appear on Monday night in "The Beggar Student," of which the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette says: The Beggar Student has made the most pronounced hit of anv of the operas m wmcu tne Macuoiim Opera Company has apxeared, The piece, as presented by the MacCollin people, has given general satisfac tion, while the different' members of the cast have acquitted themselves very well and have proved to be thoroughly reliable and well-trained comic opera artists, singing and act ing their parts with feeling and ex pression. The box sheet will be open at Heinsberger's to-morrow morning A Lucky Escape. Last Sunday morning three sons of Mr. Littleton, accompanied by six other boys, went in the woods to gather haws. As the . absence of the boys was prolonged to an un usual time the parents became alarmed and started in quest of their children. The searchers hunted for the hst ones foralong time without success, but finally heard shouts' by which they were guided to a little island in a creek, which leads from Greenfield pond to the river, on which they found the boys, cut off from the main land by the rising tide and up to their waists in water, clinging to the bushes and praying that they might be saved. It was nearly 11 o'clock at night when they were-discovered ami rescued, and they- were in rather a perilous situa tion, as the tide was still rising. It was a happy and timely discovery, and the lucky escape of the boys will probably deter them from haw hunting on Sunday, in the future. Fine Silk Scarfs for Sic. Worth 65 Cents. I.
